Ubuntu “Juice”

Virtualisation is the current hot topic within the IT sector at the moment. It has many advantages as well as a few disadvantages, as I discussed on my main blog in System virtualisation - future or fad?

Not to be left out, Canonical announced at the VMWorld conference that they are releasing another Ubuntu version that will be optimised for running as a virtual appliance. Ubuntu JeOS (pronounced “Juice”) stands for Just Enough Operating System, and is a cut down and optimised OS designed to be used to host applications delivered as “virtual appliances” or ready-to-run virtual machines. The optimisation has removed functionality that is not required and optimised the OS in order to improve performance when run as a guest host on VMware.

Shuttleworth Interview

The Lifehacker blog have an interesting interview with the founder of Ubuntu, Mark Shuttleworth. In the interview he describes his working day, the tools he uses on Ubuntu, the deal with Dell and the reasoning behind the Ubuntu release strategy. It’s reassuring to see that Mark Shuttleworth is a believer in using the correct tool for the job when choosing between different OS and software, even if he has a natural bias towards one particular OS!

Unpatched Ubuntu community servers hacked

A number of Ubuntu community “LoCo” web servers were shutdown this week after discovering that they had been compromised and were being used to launch attacks on other systems.

An email and news letter to community members detailed how the systems were running numerous web applications and had not been patched for some time, meaning that any one of several security vulnerabilities (that had already been fixed) had allowed a hacker to gain root level access to the servers.

This compromise is another reminder of the importance of only installing the minimum amount of software required and ensuring that the system is patched as frequently as possible.
